However, many businesses encounter numerous challenges and make common mistakes when creating vertical video content, which can negatively impact the effectiveness of their video campaigns. Let’s outline the most common mistakes!

1. BAD BAD LIGHTNING!

Mistake: Dark and poorly lit videos are hard to watch and fail to capture attention. Poor lighting is one of the most common errors that can greatly affect the quality of your video. Rookie mistake!

Solution: Always shoot in a well-lit environment. Use natural light whenever possible, or invest in basic lighting equipment, such as LED lights, to ensure a clear and bright image.

2. Poor audio – UNCLEAR VOICES

Mistake: Poor audio can be very distracting for viewers. Background noise, echo, or low volume can detract from your video’s message. It is important to grab a hook in 3 secs. If a viewer sees more than 3 seconds and HAS NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE SAYING … You failed.

Solution: Use a quality microphone and record in quiet locations – look on Amazon for good microphones, such as Rode, and DJI or see other recommendations. In post-production, software is used to clean up the audio and remove unwanted noise. Any better video app is great for this (Adobe programmes, CapCut, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro ,..).

3. Ignoring the format – VERTICAL ONLY GOES ON VERTICAL PLATFORMS … AND VICE VERSA.

Mistake: Recording videos in the wrong aspect ratio (e.g., horizontal instead of vertical) can make your videos less engaging on platforms designed for vertical viewing.

Solution: Always shoot vertically (9:16) for platforms like TikTok and Instagram Stories. Ensure your content is focused and adapted to the vertical format. If posting on Youtube, shoot horizontally (16:9).

4. Video length – 15 to 30 secs

Mistake: Too long or too short videos can quickly lose viewer interest or not capture it at all. Social media platforms are known for their short attention spans and require a good video length. CAUTION: It is hard to say what is too long or too short because we don’t know what you are doing. Try both and see what works best.

Solution: Keep your videos concise. For TikTok and Instagram Reels, the optimal length is between 15 and 30 seconds. Focus on delivering your message quickly and effectively, but not too short! Cut the video when needed and emphasize when you are telling something important to viewers.

5. PLANNING is key!

Mistake: Videos that are poorly shot or edited can look unprofessional and deter viewers. Unnecessary shots and sounds you don’t need will drastically lower the quality of the video.

Solution: Plan and script your videos before shooting. Take the time to edit your videos to remove errors and add effects that enhance the content quality. Use the simple video editing apps we already mentioned above (section 2).

6. Ignoring the Target Audience

Mistake: Not knowing or considering your target audience can lead to creating content that doesn’t resonate with viewers.

Solution: Research your target audience and understand their interests, needs, and desires. Tailor your content to engage and attract your specific audience! The more your target group is defined (age, gender, interests, looks, desires, challenges they are facing, lifestyle they are living), the more ideas you will have while writing scripts!
